Hermione looked up at Ron, watching as he extended his hand for her to take. Hermione took his hand, though she was not unaware to the change in his expression. Ron's face now held a look of anger, one she was not keen about. Hermione's expression turned appologetic. "No, I'm sorry. It wasn't your fault. Are you alright?" Hermione asked, for he had not answered her question before. She figured he was fine, but she did not want him to be upset with her, and she hoped that she could calm him.
She realized that she may have seemed rude, especially when her moods changed so quickly. She knew that she did this, at least she noticed she did this at times, but there was little she could do to stop her anger or annoyance from fighting its way out. And unfortunately, Ron seemed to be around often when she got angry, whether it was because of something he did or not. "Shall we continue to the third floor for Prefect duties?" Hermione asked, hoping that by brushing aside the accident would keep Ron from getting angry at her.

It didn't take long before Ron's face flushed pink, he was happy again, but that thought brought him a bit of fear. He wasn't used to getting over his grudges with Hermione so easily, he assumed it was all part of him fancying her. " Umm...sure, we don't want to be around to late tonight. I'm actually planning to study for a test this time. Maybe I might get a better grade, but you know how that goes " he replied with a slight pout. He was never good at charms, and always looked to Hermione for help, or more to less her doing his work.
As he began to walk over to the third floor he walked just as slow as Hermione, perhaps trying to make the conversation last longer, but it just seemed obvious if anyone were to see how he might have felt for her.

Hermione was pleased that Ron was no longer upset. Though she often found herself enjoying angering him, she disliked his company when he was not in a good mood. Unfortunately, it was often that the two of them were in a disagreement. So, they spent a fair amount of time arguing, and angry with each other. She enjoyed proving her point to him, but the anger that they felt made her uneasy, especially in such unhappy times.
Hermione laughed lightly at Ron's comment about studying. "Ha! You, study?" In the six years she had spent with him, she had never seen him study. Or, if she had, he had never taken it seriously. Him and Harry goofed off, barely opening the books from which they would learn the material needed to pass the exams. He was the same with assignments they received in class. He would push them aside until the last possible minute, then beg Hermione for her help. Of course, Hermione did not want to give her friend the answers, but neither did she want to see him fail miserably. "I would love to see the day when you studied for more than fifteen minutes, and actually learned something from it."
Hermione noticed that Ron walked rather slow today. At least slow for him. His legs were so long, he was usually a few paces ahead of her. She also noticed that she was walking fairly slow as well, and she did nothing to pick up her pace. She had been fighting with her own thoughts for quite some time now, wondering if her feelings for Ron had gotten stronger than she first believed. Only a few years ago, if someone proposed the idea, she would have been almost disgusted at it. Now, however, she was unsure of how she felt. Or, that was what she told herself.

It was getting quite late and Ron noticed his shift was soon over, he thought of heading back to the Gryffindor commonroom. He assumed Hermione had the same hours as he did, he wasn't quite sure so he looked to her just next to her, " Are you done for the night?.... I've just finished mine." he continued. Just then he thought of what Sophie had adviced him some days earlier to do, he constantly summersed his thoughts on how to ask Hermione or tell her how he felt but he never found the courage he needed. It was increidle to him how strange it was to muster the guts to tell a girl his feelings than it were to fight with Harry against Voldermort.
"Just keep it simple" he thought on his own, he kept wondering if maybe that night would just be it. But it would all depend if she joined him back to the commonroom. He was a bit nervous, but at the same he was sure of it.

The time passed rather quickly. Well, it felt quick to Hermione. Quicker than normal. She was slightly surprised when Ron asked her if she was finished, for she could have sworn that they still had a while to go. But she realized that it was late, and that her Prefect duties for the night were complete. "Oh, I guess I am done," she said. She was happy to be able to go back to the common room.
They turned to walk in the direction of the common room, passing a few empty classrooms. Through the windows of the classrooms, Hermione saw that indeed it was dark outside. The sun had set, at least an hour ago. Night was a fearful time for Hermione. Not often, but she thought more about the situation she and her friends were in during the evening. Especially when she went to bed, for her mind wandered most then. She feared for her friends and all those she cared for most at night. She could not prevent her mind from thinking about all that had happened, all that would come. Though she was confident they would prevail, she knew their victory would not be without loss.
"Common room?" She asked. Though she doubted he would head elsewhere, she didn't want to steer him in that direction if he wished to go a different way. She had instincitvely turned in the direction of the common room, without first thinking if Ron had elsewhere to be. She hoped he would accompany her to the common room, but if he chose to go a different way, she would not protest.

Ron seemed to be fighting with his own brain on what exactly to do, until she heard her,
"common room?" she asked curiously.
" umm, yea....I mean we are heading back to our dorm right?...well, I'd like to go back..." he continued with a bashful tone in his voice. He wasn't quite sure what to say, it seemed he was confused. But his mind was made up and before they both headed to bed he needed to ask her.

The two of them walked through the halls and up the staircases to get to the seventh floor, where the Gryffindor Common Room was located. Hermione liked that the common room was so high up, in a tower. Well, she sure liked it better than the alternative, which was in the dungeons. The Ravenclaw and Gryffindor common rooms were located in towers, while the Slytherin and Hufflepuff common rooms were in the dungeons. Hermione only went down to the dungeons for Potions. That is, she only went down to the dungeons regularly for Potions.
"Well, I was just maing sure you didn't have anywhere else to go before we headed in the direction of the Common Room," Hermione said. They continued on their way to the Common Room. Hermione spoke the password when the two approached the portrait of the Fat Lady, then walked through the portrait hole. Hermione did not turn around to see if Ron had followed her before she sat down on the sofa that was placed in front of the fire. Only then when she was seated did she look back at him.

Ron was emphatically nervous, he could feel himself melting away after all the intense thoughts running through his mind. After following Hermione all the way in to the common room, he saw her rest on the sofa and figured it was either now or nothing.
" Er-mio-nee...umm....I have been meaning to talk to you actually, see....well it's quite hard for me to say so be patient " he hesitated and took deep breathes as though he couldn't word the thought in his head. " Well ...the point I'm trying to say is that....I .....I ......um....I really like you, and thought .....maybe..I don't know ...if you would like to ....go out with me?" he slightly squealed as though he were going through puberty all over again. He couldn't believe he said it, not to mention being completely red in the face. He halted at the edge of the sofa as well, waiting patiently for her answer. He just wasn't so confident of her answer.

Hermione was unsure of what she had just heard. Had he really just asked her out? She had never imagined Ron to think of her as more than a friend. Her breath caught in her throat for a moment. She could have imagined it all. There was certainly a chance that he hadn't said anything, that it had all been in her head. But she couldn't be sure. She waited a moment, then realized she had not imagined any of it, and that Ron was awaiting her answer.
Hermione didn't know what to say to him. She thought about it, and couldn't think of an answer that would please both of them. At least, no answer that she could say. Not while so much was going on outside, as well as inside, the walls of Hogwarts. This conversation, though she was happy at his question, seemed insignificant. So much evil was growing outside of Hogwarts, and even some of Hogwarts' students were turning to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. She felt as if they should be spending every waking moment searching for answers to their questions about what would happen once they left Hogwarts' walls to fight them, not asking each other questions. Especially not ones Hermione wished she did not have to answer. Not now, at least.
She did not want to tell Ron that she did not like him, for she did. She had denied it for so long, but just recently she had come to accept the feelings she had for her friend. But now did not seem like the right time to share these feelings with him. Not when so much pain was to come. With all that was going on, Hermione did not think it was fair to feel happiness, while so many were hurt. But she had to answer Ron. She chose her words carefully.
"I... I don't know," Hermione replied softly. "Do you really think this is the best time to ask? With all that is going to happen, we really can't afford to let anything distract us. Because if anything does distract us, for even a brief moment, it could ruin all we've hoped and worked for. Dragging our attention away from what we have to do for just a minute may allow Him to bring all of us down. I don't want that to happen. W-we can't lose focus." Hermione's last few words came out rather softly, and she stumbled over them.
Her words out, Hermione turned her head towards the fire. She did not want to see the hurt look in Ron's face she knew was there. She cared about him a lot, but she was always worried about what would happen in the future. What she had said was true; they could not afford to lose focus on what they had to do. Not even for a moment. But she wished it could be different.
She meant each word she said, but she wished she did not have to say them. Her head had been telling her all of this, that what she had said was right. But her heart had disagreed. And now, it was heavier than ever before. She did not want to hurt Ron, or herself. But Hermione had always listened to her head. Her whole life, Hermione had been a bright witch, and because of that, she did whatever she felt was logical. But now, she did not feel confident in this. If her statement had been logical, why did she now feel so much pain? Tears built up in her eyes, but she refused to let Ron see her cry. She could only hope that Ron understood why she said all of this, and that he knew she cared for him greatly.

Ron could sense the problem she faced in answering his question and she understood her completely, it seemed inappropiate. But at the same time he turned and looked into her eyes, getting closer to her and subconciously just holding her hand. " That's exactly why I thought about asking you now because....be....cause ...I'm scared....I'm scared that in our fight to defeat you-know-who....that I might lose you...." he replied with a quiver in his tone. He didn't seem embarrassed anymore, he knew very well that their focus should not be distracted one bit from the main focus but at the same time he couldn't stop thinking about what he would do to keep her safe.
And if he didn't lose her but it were the other way around he at least wished that he would express his feelings to the one girl in his heart. He looked straight in her eyes and thought that it would be either then or never, he needed to know if she did care about him as much as he did, he wanted to know that fighting for his own life just in order to be by her side in the end would be all worth the effort. It was just like Ron to be quite pessimistic, first his family, then his friends, and now he didn't want Hermione to be far from his side as well.

The words that came out of Ron's mouth made Hermione's heart soar. Though she had never really accepted that she had fallen for her best friend, there was no doubt now how she felt about him. How could there be, when his statement made her overjoyed? The touch of his hand on hers sent tingles up her arm. She had never really felt this way before. In actuallity, the only other person she had ever really been close to in such a manner was Victor Krum, and she had not felt the way he had. She had seen him as a good friend. And that they were. But here, now, Hermione could not stop herself from feeling happy, even at such difficult times.
Hermione did not know what to say. She did not want to lose him either. That was the last thing she wanted. But, it did not seem like an appropriate time to think of anything other than their mission. Her head told her to focus solely on what they had to do, but her heart was shouting at her to go with him. She did not know which to listen to. For as long as she could remember, her head had always pointed her in the right direction with no objection from her heart. Now, however, she was more confused than she had ever been. And confusion did not settle well with Hermione.
Their eyes locked, and Hermione could not tear hers away. She felt obligated to respond right then, but no words would come. She took a breath and attempted to say something, anything, intelligently. But all that came out was a studder. "Ron.. I-I.. Um. Well.." she sighed. Why was it so hard? She wanted to say how much she cared about him, but admitting those feelings was difficult for her. Their friendship had been more awkward than hers and Harry's. She and Ron fought more. The friendship she shared with Harry was easier. She did not have to worry about fighting with him, because he always took her thoughts into consideration. But Ron was a different story. None of this should have mattered though, because she knew how she felt, and she should have been able to voice it.

Ron was getting the impression that Hermione did not have the same feelings he expected to hear, he didn't want to lose hope but the notion that he might not be able to be with Hermione even if it were their last battle may not be realized. He gripped to his nerves as he still held her hand and just sustained himself from doing anything more, " Hermione, if you don't want to..... I understand.... " he replied with a slight hint of regret.
He was losing it inside, his head was confused of so many emotions, regret, happiness, guilt, it was just a tumulting ascent of thoughts that he no longer could grip. " ....that's alright... I believe you've made your point" he continued as he began to lose his grip upon her hand and just let his hand down as though he failed miserably. He stepped back still looking at her eye-to-eye, but realizing it was hopeless, that he just may have lost her, he began to walk to his side of the dormitories. He hoped he might hear her tell him to stop and confess affectionate words of love other than friendship. But he feared that would be the least of his hopes.

Hermione knew she had pushed him away. That was the last thing she had wanted. Her eyes were full of pain as he backed away from her. She did not want to see him hurting that way. And she was now hurting in the exact same way. Tears filled her eyes as he released her hand. She missed the warmth his hand gave her. His eyes held hers for a moment longer, and then he turned toward the boys dormitories.
Hermione desperately wanted to shout to him to turn around. She willed herself to do so. In her mind, she had wished to shout out that she felt the same way. But all that came out of her mouth was, "Ron, don't go." She had said it so softly, she wondered if Ron had even heard it. She hoped he had, for if he continued up the stairs, she would be devastated. "Please."

Ron through the faintness of the commonroom heard a slight whisper of a tone slip through Hermione's lips asking him not to go, in the nervousness of the moment he figured it was just some voice in his head that wanted to hear her saying it. But just as he stepped the first step on the staircase he stopped and slightly turned to look at Hermione whom by now was completely teary eyed. He didn't have a clue of what was running through her mind at the instant but it sure gave him a quiver to think that she might actually be reconsidering what he said. It was all very confusing and he only patiently waited at the base of the stairs waiting to see if what he hoped for might be true.

Hermione watched as Ron paused, one foot on the first step. She wished he would put his foot back on the floor, and turn to face her. He turned his head to look at her over his shoulder. Hermione hoped he had heard her, but his face gave no indication of whether he had or not. The tears in her eyes finally rolled down her cheeks. She did not bother to wipe away these tears, for the ones that followed would only follow the same patterns as these did.
Hermione waited a moment to determine whether Ron was stopped, or whether his hesitation was fleeting. Luckily, he was standing at the stairs waiting to hear if she did really wish him to stay. And she did. "Ron, please don't go." Hermione whispered a bit louder this time. "I don't want you to." She wished she could say more, but she did not know how Ron would react. She waited to see how he would take her plea.
